Year 2010 of the Faculty of Medicine -
COLOURFUL AND BUSY

Year 2010 was exciting at the Faculty of Medicine as we lived through the first year within the new University. Not only did we teach 1000 students of medicine and 230 of dentistry, of whom 141 and 33 graduated, respectively; but also produced over 200 new specialists in 49 different areas of medicine.

Furthermore, we published nearly 2000 peer reviewed articles in international journals and more than100 doctoral theses were supervised within the Faculty.

Several new practices were implemented in the administration, such as the Management Team, where the Dean, Vice Deans and all Heads of Departments are members. 

We have also succeeded well in our third mission within the society to apply new knowledge to the benefit of people.

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki is known for its high-quality, competitive research and teaching. Our Faculty together with Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) has been evaluated in several rankings as one of the top Medical Schools in Europe and in the whole world (QS World University Rankings). We have defined our research priority areas together with HUS and they are areas where we are already strong, i.e.,  (i) malignant growth, (ii) inflammation and infection, (iii) metabolism, and (iv) degenerative processes. Further development is needed in (v) psychiatric disorders and their mechanisms.

We have opened two new tenure-track positions within our focus areas and also allocated infrastructure and other resources to these topics. Our researchers and teachers have received several national and international awards and major grants during the year 2010.

I am deeply grateful to all staff members at the Faculty of Medicine (n= 1040) for their contin­ued effort and dedication in making our Medical Campus such a unique place. After all it is the individuals who are really behind all our success!
