Research in faculty

The Meilahti-Ruskeasuo Campus of the University of Helsinki is home to an internationally significant centre for medicine which comprises the Faculty of Medicine, the Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH/Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa) and the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM). The Faculty has a strong research tradition ranging from basic biological research to clinical applications. The Faculty ranks fifth among European universities based on the citation index for clinical medicine, and has trained several influential Finnish scientists and experts who currently work in Finland or abroad.
For the strategy period 2010–2012, the focus areas of research in the Faculty include malignancy, inflammation, metabolism, degenerative processes as well as psychiatric disorders and their mechanisms.
The Faculty comprises five departments and a Research Programmes Unit. The following research programmes have been selected for 2007–2012: Genome-Scale Biology, Infection Biology, Molecular Medicine, Molecular Cancer Biology, Molecular Neurology and Women’s Health. In addition, the Campus hosts Finnish centres of excellence in cancer biology, genetics, mitochondrial disease research, brain research, developmental biology and genome-scale biology. The Faculty employs more than 400 principal investigators, who together constitute the Research Faculty. The Faculty’s international research cooperation benefits from the presence of leading international research groups as well as FiDiPro (Finland Distinguished Professor Programme) professors on campus.
