Specialist training
Faculty of Medicine offers specialist training in 49 programs.
A specialist degree in medicine/dentistry can be taken by professionals licensed by the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira).
Practicing medicine or dentistry in Finland is subject to a right to practise issued by the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira). Professionals may, upon application, be granted a licence to practise and be entered in the Central Register for Health Care Professionals (TERHIKKI).
To get the permit or a license to practice medicine or dentistry n Finland depends on whether the applicant is a citizen of an EU/ EEA member state and whether the applicant’s qualification was taken in or outside the EU/EEA country.
The goal of medical specialist education is to acquant the practitioners in the scientific knowledge of their specialty and to prepare them for specialist practice in the field. In addition, the programmes aim at providing the practitioners with the ability to maintain the professional competence and to function as consultants within the service system of social and health care. Besides training in the specialty the practitioners are introduced to health care planning, administration and multi-professional co-operation.
The specialist degree requires 5 or 6 years of medical practice including at least 9 months of services in public health centers, theoretical and administrative courses and passing a national written exam.
The applicants are responsible for finding a post for training by themselves. The practice shall be carried out on a full-time basis under the supervision of the competent authorizes and bodies. The health care professionals must possess an adequate oral and written command of Finnish or Swedish.
The degree of medical specialist in Finland is a specialized postgraduate degree that may be taken in the Faculties of Medicines at the Universities of Helsinki, University of Eastern Finland (Kuopio), Oulu, Tampere, and Turku.
